Therapeutic Community Program for Substance Misuse
The Therapeutic Community Program for Substance Misuse [TC] has been designed specifically to treat substance use within a prison setting.
Therapeutic communities use the community itself as the primary method of treatment. These communities provide a structured environment where residents work together to change ways of thinking and behaving that have in the past contributed to their substance abuse.
Residents provide support for each other within the community by sharing knowledge, experiences, successes and skills.
The program consists of three phases:
- Contemplating Change: Understanding the mechanisms behind substance use
- Preparing for Change: Developing and strengthening life skills
- Taking Action for Change: Relapse and prevention strategies for a balanced lifestyle
This plan is monitored by case management coordinators [CMC].
If an offender has any questions about the program or their plan they should contact their CMC.
