Engineering and woodwork
Woodwork workshops
There are woodworking industries at Port Augusta Prison, Yatala Labour Prison, Mount Gambier Prison and Port Lincoln Prison.
The woodwork workshops produce a range of high quality goods, such as:
- dining room sets
- large wooden toys
- kitchen chopping blocks
- special order contracts with external companies.
Some prisons have provided training through an external provider for workers to gain qualifications such as Certificate II in Civil Construction.
Metal workshops
There are metal workshops at Port Augusta Prison, Yatala Labour Prison, Mount Gambier Prison, Port Lincoln Prison and Mobilong Prison.
A range of metal fabrication activities occur in the metal shops including high level skills such as welding.
Goods produced include:
- making beds for refurbished prison accommodation
- lobster pots
- pizza ovens, and
- pot belly stoves.
In some prisons Certificate II in Engineering is offered to help prisoners gain a formal qualification as well as the work experience.
Concrete products
Mobilong Prison produces concrete products, such as:
- concrete sleepers used in retaining walls, and
- concrete pavers.
Recycling workshops
Mobilong Prison also operates a television recycling workshop that separates the materials into individual components.
