The Strong Foundations and Clear Pathways: Women Offender Framework & Action Plan (2014- 2019) was released by the Department for Correctional Services (DCS) in 2015, and established the requirement for the department to develop a more robust approach to the management of women with children.
The Government has engaged in significant consultation to consider in detail the impacts on children with a female carer into the correctional system, in addition to infant and family care arrangements for women in prison.
A Ministerial Workgroup on Women Offenders was established, and the Stronger Together: Safe Children & Strong Families is an important milestone in the Action Plan.
The central tenet of Stronger Together is that all children need safe and strong families in which to grow and develop. Based on this tenet, Stronger Together is about addressing the distinct role that DCS has to play in achieving better outcomes for impacted children and families.
