Library services and access to books

All South Australian prisons have libraries.

Some of the libraries are located in the prison’s education centre and some within other areas of the prison.

Prisoners can physically access the library in most prisons however in some prisons such as the Adelaide Remand Centre library staff run an ‘outreach’ model where prisoners can request books to be delivered to them.

Most libraries are staffed by prisoners who act as librarians and who learn to use a professional library loan software system.

The libraries also run the volunteer supported library services program.

Libraries stock a wide range of books including:

  • books for beginner readers as well as the more advanced readers
  • fiction and non-fiction books
  • various genres, and
  • audio books in compact disc format.
